Energy nonequipartition in a sheared granular mixture
نویسنده
چکیده
The kinetic granular temperatures of a binary granular mixture in simple shear flow are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic theory by using a Sonine polynomial expansion. The results show that the temperature ratio is clearly different from unity (as may be expected since the system is out of equilibrium) and strongly depends on the restitution coefficients as well as on the parameters of the mixture. The approximate analytical calculations are compared with those obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the Boltzmann equation showing an excellent agreement over the range of parameters investigated. Finally, the influence of the temperature differences on the rheological properties is also discussed. PACS number(s): 45.70.Mg, 05.20.Dd, 51.10.+y, 47.50.+d Typeset using REVTEX

Heating mechanism affects equipartition in a binary granular system.
Two species of particles in a binary granular system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, in contrast to the equipartition of energy required in equilibrium. We investigate the role of the heating mechanism in determining the extent of nonequipartition of kinetic energy. In most experiments, different species are unequally heated at the boundaries. We show by event-driven simulat...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulations of vibrated granular gases.
We present molecular dynamics simulations of monodisperse or bidisperse inelastic granular gases driven by vibrating walls, in two dimensions (without gravity). Because of the energy injection at the boundaries, a situation often met experimentally, density and temperature fields display heterogeneous profiles in the direction perpendicular to the walls. A general equation of state for an arbit...
متن کاملGranular gases: dynamics and collective effects
We present a biased review of some of the most ‘spectacular’ effects appearing in the dynamics of granular gases where the dissipative nature of the collisions leads to a rich phenomenology, exhibiting striking differences with equilibrium gases. Among these differences, the focus here is on the illustrative examples of the ‘Maxwell demon’-like experiment, modification of Fourier’s law, nonequi...
متن کاملVelocity autocorrelations and viscosity renormalization in sheared granular flows.
The decay of the velocity autocorrelation function in a sheared granular flow is analyzed in the limit where the wavelength of fluctuations is larger than the "conduction length," so that energy is a nonconserved variable. The decay of the velocity autocorrelation function is much faster than that in a fluid at equilibrium for which energy is a conserved variable. Specifically, the autocorrelat...
متن کاملEarthquake behaviour and large-event predictability in a sheared granular stick-slip system
We present results from a physical experiment which demonstrates that a sheared granular medium behaves in a manner analogous to earthquake activity. The device consists of an annular plate rotating over a granular medium in a stick-slip fashion. Previous observations by us include a bounded critical state with a power law distribution of event energy consistent with the Gutenberg-Richter law, ...
